Past achievements
For the past six years, the team at Pax Africa has worked closely with key African policy makers and serviced the AU Peace and Security Department (PSD), NEPAD Secretariat, regional economic communities (RECs) lead African nations, and Africa’s development partners, including the G-8 Member States, the African Partnership Forum (APF) and the European Union. Pax Africa’s support has taken four forms:
i) working closely with African multilateral institutions and global partners in the development of the African Peace and Security Agenda (APSA),
ii) assisting in the development and harmonisation of the policies, strategies, legislation and processes, from the national to continental level, relating to the prevention of conflict on the continent,
iii) supporting the development and implementation of peace and security policies, and
iv) collaborating with and strengthening the capacity of African civil society organizations, parliaments, private sector and faith-based organizations in creating awareness of the AU-NEPAD processes.
During those six years, key outputs included:
a) the facilitation of consultations on peace and security between actors within the continent (including the AU PSD, NEPAD Secretariat, representatives of RECs, Departments of Defence, Departments of Foreign Affairs, and civil society) as well as international partners;
b) the facilitation of brainstorming sessions of the AU Peace and Security Council (PSC) on critical areas of the APSA;
c) political consensus-building to develop common positions on various aspects of the APSA;
d) regular briefings with various governmental and non-governmental actors involved in the development of APSA;
e) regular policy fora and publication of a quarterly newsletter on peace and security to disseminate information on continental peace and security priorities;
f) background research and analysis on key peace and security issues such as the exploitation and management of natural resources and the integration of NEPAD into AU structures;
g) generation of base documents and subsequent drafts of policies, including:
1. Draft NEPAD Initial Action Plan on
Peace and Security that formed the basis of the G8 Africa Action
Plan;
2. Draft Protocol Relating to the Establishment of the Peace and
Security Council of the AU;
3. Draft Framework Document for the Establishment of the African
Standby Force;
4. Draft Common African Defence and Security Policy,
5. Draft AU Policy on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development
(PCRD).
